21st Skills -- An Added Benefit!

by Visitor on 09-30-2010 11:56 PM

As I have stated before the need for our embracing technology in order to prepare our children for a more productive future is critical. There is a side benefit to this technology movement and that is the fact that we are also preparing our students for their academic future. The use of technology is not only to assist in delivering content but is used to make that content more robust and accessible. The use of Wikis, blogs, social media sites, youTube and other content delivery mechanisms is becoming a way of life. K-12 faculty are beginning to see the benefit of utilizing technology in many ways, such as using mobile technology to deliver content. An example is a student that successfully taught a calculus class utilizing nothing but cell phone technology. It is this type of creative use of technology that is going to help us to ride the leading edge of this technological tidal wave into the future and help prepare our children for a world that is not only mobile but accessible around the world. After all is this not what we want as academics?

You're absolutely correct. Change is sometimes difficult and scary, but teachers are seeing the advantages of using technology in the classroom. I believe most are excited about access to all this new information - and more important, they are getting the students engaged when they use ipad, smartphones, etc.

I love technology.  I love the ability to access information in the time it takes to type a question, and that answers can come in a variety of formats.

I just hope that in the midst of all this technology we do not forget that our students are often still children who need to interact with each other and their teachers in face to face interactions!
