Every book has the unique opportunity to take its reader on a fantastic voyage, bringing them into a world they have never seen before. This opportunity can also allow books to take readers into subjects and places that some parents and teachers might prefer to avoid. Unfortunately, if that book is censored or banned, a student’s opportunity to learn important lessons from that book is cut short.

Plenty of literary classics have found themselves banned from schools and libraries, despite their proven worthiness as a significant educational piece of literature. I like Alfred Whitney Griswold’s take on the topic: “Books won't stay banned. They won't burn. Ideas won't go to jail. In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost. The only sure weapon against bad ideas is better ideas.”

Growing popularity of MBA and success of internet and communication technology has led to a rise in online study programmes. Colleges offering online MBA degrees are gaining momentum. Traditionally, MBA could be pursued by those who could dedicate 2 full years for study. But with online MBA programs, students can study at their own place. Targeted mainly towards working people, one can choose to study online in a way that fits their busy schedule. You can now work, go on holiday, have other commitments without worrying of missing lectures or assignments.

Online MBA courses facilitate course-work, lectures, group projects and assignments via internet communication, word processing and spreadsheet software. Though they may not give you the experience of actual classroom, study content and exercises are the same. Students who pursue online MBA degree receive lectures on video and slides which can be downloaded. So they can revise and study lectures over and over. Group discussions are also arranged in such a way that faculty and students from different locations can participate. Interaction takes place online by Podcasts, live satellite feeds and discussion boards. Students read, study and submit assignments when they are ready. Some B-schools offer online MBA programs that include on-campus attendance during the beginning and end of the semesters.

Lot of options and choices are now available while choosing a B-school for online MBA degree, both Indian and International. In India, classes are held at dedicated centres all over the country. A few hours of a week or couple of days in a term, students may be required to attend classes. Free online entrance tests, mock tests, practice sets, test analysis are also available for such a course.

Who should pursue online MBA program?

  • Programs like these are mostly designed for working professionals. This study is used by them as an added qualification for promotion and higher post.
  • A technical background professional can benefit through online MBA degree to get into managerial/executive position at his workplace.
  • Online MBA program may not place a fresh student in a job.
  • Not just time, but it offers flexibility in terms of money also. Fees are less as compared to a full time course.

Tips to follow while choosing online MBA program:

  • Quality of the MBA course matters a lot. Even the quality of the faculty is important.
  • Find out if the course has accredition from reputed institute or university.
  • Check for international credibility of the course
  • Learn about the methods of  delivering/receiving the study materials and contents
  • Some courses require your presence for a few hours or days. Check your availability
  • Even though the study is like a full time MBA, online program misses the actual classroom environment.
  • Get interaction with not only the faculty but other students as well. You should be able to participate in forums and discussions.
  • Figure out the technology that particular B-school uses for delivering and receiving study material and assignments.  Some B-schools will ask you to install certain software programs it uses for its course.

The concept of online MBA course is a new trend of study. Though the industry debates on its pros and cons; online program benefits those who want flexibility of time and money and yet have better career prospects.

Vote for Me “We Are Teachers” Contest

by Occasional Visitor on 11-29-2011 10:14 AM - last edited on 11-29-2011 10:15 AM

“How do you engage students’ creativity and critical thinking skills at the same time?”

By submitting my idea I have a chance to win $100 in cash, an ipod touch and an ipad2 with an itunes gift card.  More than 270 ideas were submitted to We Are Teachers.  Below is the proposal I posted.  Please vote for me so that I can be one of the 5 teachers to win the loot!

I Want Your Job: A Career Resource Wiki (Vote Here)

Description:

Wikis are an ideal tool to engage students’ creativity and critical thinking skills at the same time. Projects created on the Wiki are student centered and modeled from real world topics to help students utilize technology, and higher levels thinking skills of Blooms Taxonomy’s. Students create wiki pages on various topics related to career exploration. Students will post Glogs about successful CEOS of companies like Google and Twitter, complete a college Webquest and compile career resources.

Learning Objectives:

Students will gain information about opportunities available to them outside of school to help determine personal goals and career aspirations. Students will examine the careers of various people by reading a variety of texts, viewing documentaries and talking to guest speakers who come to our class about their career paths. Students will utilize technology to record and report their understanding, learning and thinking regarding their own aspirations in connection to those studied.

Materials:

Most of the resources students utilize will come from online. One documentary we will view is RoadTrip Nation and we will also contact people in the community to come and talk with students. Skype can also be used if we want to speak with people who are not able to meet us in our classroom. The Wiki will be designed using Wikispaces. Students will also complete a project where they interview someone about their own career and success (using a podcasting program online or flip camera).

Additional Information:

I teach a career exploration course to 7 and 8th graders in a suburban school outside of New York City. Most of what my students know about careers are those that their parents have and the careers that are highlighted in the media. Students rarely get to see the variety of careers that are out there or how people are making their own career paths. An interactive Wiki page and the utilization of other technology can show students that learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom.

Simple Principles Of Learning

by Member on 08-28-2011 05:40 PM

The problem with our approach to education is that we only tell half the story, what to learn but not how to learn it

"Let the main object... to seek and to find a method of instruction, by which teachers may teach less, but learners learn more."  John Amos Comenius

Module #1 - Simple Principles Of Learning.    http://simpleprinciplesoflearning.blogspot.com/

“It is not enough to do your best; you must know what to do, and then do your best.” – Edwards Deming

“The most important thing that a kid can learn at school is how to learn and think.”   - President Barack Obama You said it all, Bravo!

"I hope our governor can assist you in getting your program in front of teachers throughout the State of California and then the nation, as we are in need of new approaches to learning."  -  Dr. Chuck Wall  http://www.chuckwall.net/     “Random Acts Of Kindness”

“We don’t have to make human beings smart. They are born smart, All we have to do is stop doing things that make them stupid,” – John Holt

Start with understanding and applying the simple principles of learning so that teachers may teach less, but learners learn more…

Best Regards,

SPOL

Having identified obesity in schools as a problem, we need to look at ways we can incorporate more exercise in schools. Developing an overall school fitness program needs to include school exercise programs in addition to teaching healthy eating habits and establishing healthier school lunch menus. Only with appropriate exercise programs can we really begin to have an affect our students’ struggle with obesity. Read more: http://www.hertzfurniture.com/school-matters/fitting-fitness-schools

Use that Empty Picture Frame in a Special Way!

by Member on 08-15-2011 02:04 PM - last edited on 08-16-2011 02:43 PM by Community Manager

A novel approach to encouraging a positive response to negative or bullying comments is simply this:

Place an empty picture frame on your classroom chalkboard and tell students that when someone says something that they feel is a nasty remark to pick up the frame, hand it to that person and say in a calm, friendly voice: "Would you mind re-framing that?" It does work!  Special reminder:  Don't be surprised if a student hands you the frame in the course of events.  You must be willing to do what you ask your students to do.
